U of S Students Eligible for Six New 'Animal Care Awards'
Adele Buettner - Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan
Farmscape for November 9, 2001 (Episode 814) Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food and the Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan are teaming up to promote animal welfare at the university level. Students attending the College of Agriculture or the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan will have the opportunity to win of six new one thousand dollar 'Animal Care Awards'. Farm Animal Council Executive Director Adele Buettner says, to qualify, students must develop and deliver a presentation on key animal care issues and trends to a panel of judges. Clip-Adele Buettner-Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan We've opened it up to six areas of livestock, pork, beef, poultry, dairy, equine or PMU and the game farming. Students have the opportunity to choose from any of those six areas to qualify. We wanted to work closely with the students on campus at the University of Saskatchewan. We've seen an opportunity to work with the kids that are enrolled in college right now because, in the near future, they'll be going out into our industry. We wanted to have some Ag ambassadors out there promoting animal welfare messages. We're working through the College of Vet Med and College of Agriculture promoting the concept of responsible management of animal welfare in the livestock industry. Once the students put together a presentation and give it to a panel in Saskatoon, those six winners will then be required to go out to a community in Saskatchewan and deliver the same presentation. Whether it be to a Four-H club, to an RM meeting or an industry meeting of some sort, they're getting the message both through the college but also back out into the industry and into the community. We're looking at the students being ambassadors for the farm animal council. Buettner says the hope is to raise the awareness of animal care issues and the importance of good livestock practices within the student body and, through them, the public at large.
