The United States expects to join Canada as a pseudo rabies free nation by the end of next year.
The US pseudo rabies eradication program began just over nine years ago.
Under that program states at stage five, the final stage of eradication, are declared absolutely disease free while states at stage four are ready to be declared so there is no infection in the swine herds of stage four or stage five states.

There's 38 states that are either in stage four or stage five right now.
We've got nine states that are still in stage three and we have three states that are split status between two and three.
We have less than, talking about percentage, we have less than one per cent of the herd in the US that are still positive for pseudo rabies.
We want to be done with eradication, really that target of stage four stage five by the end of the year 2000.
Because of the way the program is built and the safeguards that we have in there, we expect to be, if we don't meet that we will be very close but our target remains pseudo rabies free by the end of 2000.
According to the figures released by the US Department of Agriculture, just over 854 thousand US hogs had been depopulated under the program by the first of this month.
Dr. Sundberg says pseudo rabies eradication is an example of a regulatory health program involving a great deal of cooperation among producers and federal and state governments.
He says it's a program the industry looks forward to having completed within the next few months.
