A chef representing Saskatoon's Picaro Restaurant claimed top honors at the taste of Saskatchewan Chef's Series held this past week at Kiwanis Park in Saskatoon.
Among the highlights of the annual Taste of Saskatchewan Festival, which wrapped up yesterday, is the Chef's Series, a head to head elimination style cooking competition.
Clinton Monchuk, the executive Director of Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan, explains Taste of Saskatchewan and the Chef's series are intended to give the public an opportunity to sample the foods served by local restaurants and learn more about agriculture and the food they eat.

Clip-Clinton Monchuk-Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan:
Typically we have right around 30 to 35 different restaurants that have booths set up during Taste of Saskatchewan so it's a wide variety of different tastes of food for Taste of Saskatchewan.
When we look at the stats there's the opportunity to get roughly a hundred thousand people coming through and purchasing food at any given time.
This is a huge audience.
Typically the demographic is mainly urban individuals, which then gives a great opportunity for our Chef Series, with the cooking competition, to actually have some of that engagement with those who don't really know a lot about  farming or food production.
One of the big things that we have when the chefs are preparing in the head to head competition is the ability to actually have some of  that engagement with the crowd and have various different MCs talk about some of the facts and figures of farming.
We had meet a farmer day on Saturday and it was a huge success.
Lots of people came to the tent asking questions about what farmers do and why and open transparent conversations about food and food production.

The winner of the year's Chef's Series competition was Chef Sydney Hamelin representing the Picaro Restaurant in Saskatoon.
