All Nations Have a Stake in Address Antimicrobial Resistance
Dr. George Charbonneau - South West Ontario Veterinary Services

Farmscape for March 9, 2018

An associate veterinarian with South West Ontario Veterinary Services, says, when it comes to addressing antimicrobial resistance, everyone in every country has an equal stake.
"Medications-The changing rules," focusing on what is happening in other pig producing regions of the world will be among the topics discussed as part of the 2018 London Swine Conference, slated for March 27 and 28.
Dr. George Charbonneau, an associate veterinarian with South West Ontario Veterinary Services, says, when it comes to antimicrobial resistance, we're all in the same boat.

Clip-Dr. George Charbonneau-South West Ontario Veterinary Services:
People that are interested in this issue, with the ability to access information, what's happening in different countries of the world, they're able to get a pretty good snapshot of who the antimicrobial resistance and usage issue is being managed on a more global basis.
I think we have to expect that people who are trying to influence how government regulates the issue in Canada or how food retailers and food outlets, institutions, grocers etceteras are going to respond to some of those concerns of consumers.
We have to be aware that they're understanding what's happening in these other jurisdictions on almost a real time basis so we need to be prepared to react to that.
As time goes by we have more and more opportunities for bilateral and multilateral trading agreements so I think we're going to have to careful to understand what our trading partners are looking for and they're certainly going to be looking to Canada to demonstrate that they've got a good approach to antimicrobial stewardship.

Dr. Charbonneau says, when it comes an issue like antimicrobial resistance. you're susceptible at the weakest link .
He says, with the ability today of people to travel, if antimicrobial resistance develops in a country where they don't have a good plan in place to prevent it, we're at risk in North American of inheriting some of those antimicrobial resistant strains because folks coming to our country, could bring them along.
