Pork Demand Expected to Determine Hog Markets
Tyler Fulton - HAMS Marketing Services

Farmscape for January 5, 2018

The Director of Risk Management with h@ms Marketing Services anticipates demand for pork will be the critical factor influencing hogs markets during 2018.
The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture Hogs and Pigs Report indicated we can expect market hog supplies to range between two and three percent higher than year ago levels over the next four months or so.
Tyler Fulton, the Director of Risk Management with h@ms Marketing Services, says that was pretty much in line with expectations but that level of growth can pressure markets so a lot will depend on the demand side.

Clip-Tyler Fulton-h@ms Marketing Services:
If we continue to get the solid domestic demand that we've seen really over the past year or so, with a little bit more support from export markets then I think we're in really good shape.
As far as the total hog numbers go, it's really not a concern relative to the slaughter capacity now with the additional plants that came on stream this past fall and, generally speaking, we think that added competition could add some support to the summer time frame.
We're fairly certain that we're looking at moderate growth in the hog numbers and so in order to maintain a good profitable trajectory on the cash market we need the demand to continue to fire along.
The early evidence suggests that the U.S. economy is in good shape.
That's probably the single biggest factor that would impact pork demand but what's possibly uncertain about the demand function this coming year is the trade question, in particular how the renegotiation of NAFTA will get resolved and if there's any concerns here.
Mexico is a really big market for U.S. pork.
It's the biggest destination for U.S. pork.

Fulton says, if there's any hiccups in those negotiations, we could see some impacts on the pork market as a result of that big U.S. Mexico relationship in the pork trade.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
