Brandon Hog and Livestock Show Attendance Suggests Pork Sector Optimism
Ron Bazylo - Manitoba Agriculture

Farmscape for December 18, 2017

Organizers of the Brandon Hog and Livestock Show suggest the success of the 2017 edition indicates a bright future for hog production in Manitoba.
The 2017 Brandon Hog Livestock show brought pork producers and their service and equipment suppliers together last week.
The event is held in Brandon in odd numbered years and in Winnipeg in even numbered years.
Ron Bazylo, an Industry Development Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture based in Dauphin and a member of the Brandon Hog & Livestock Show organizing committee, says the attendance at this year's event suggests the pork sector is very stable.

Clip-Ron Bazylo-Manitoba Agriculture:
We are fortunate this year.
We've had probably one of the largest events that we've had as far as I can remember.
We've got over 135 exhibitors, which is way up from just over 100 in previous years.
The exhibitors show every thing from equipment that they have to offer.
We've got even some vehicles that have been exhibited.
We've got people involved in the feed industry, animal health products, various things like insurance and I think just by looking at the number of exhibitors and displayers on hand it's showing that this event is quite successful.
It's one thing we're always concerned about.
A number of years back, it used to be a two day event and we've switched that to a one day event but we feel it's very successful.
A two day event, on the second day, we had less traffic go through so we thought we'll just change it to one day and we think it's very successful.

Bazylo says there's interest in new equipment, there's interest in building designs so the future of hog production in Manitoba looks very optimistic.
He says everybody seems to be in an upbeat mood which is nice to see and when you get this type of participation it's a good indication that the sector is stable and thriving.
