Saskatchewan Agriculture Issues Final Crop Report of 2017
Shannon Friesen - Saskatchewan Agriculture

Farmscape for October 27, 2017

Saskatchewan Agriculture reports about average overall yields this year, ranging from above average in the north to below average in the south.
In its final crop report of the season, released yesterday, Saskatchewan Agriculture reports this year was characterized by an extreme lack moisture,  very hot temperatures and for a number of weeks strong winds so, even though the season started out promising, the soils dried out quickly.
Shannon Friesen, a Cropping Management Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says while crop quality has been the best in years yields were variable depending on amounts of rain.

Clip-Shannon Friesen-Saskatchewan Agriculture:
Provincially the hard red spring wheat yield is at about 43 bushels per acre.
That does range from about 33 in areas of the southwest up to 49 bushels in the northeast.
Durum ranges anywhere from about 33 bushels in the southwest to about 54 bushels in the northeast.
Oats is an interesting one.
Parts of the northeast, again with their timely moisture and good soil moisture, average oat yields have been about 107 bushels per acre but all the way the southwest it's only about half with 51 only bushels.
Canola, our provincial average is about 34 bushels per acre ranging from 25 in the south to 39 in north.
Soybeans overall in many areas of the south and central parts were not as high yielding as we have seen over the last number of years and so our provincial average is only about 18 bushels per acre.
Some crops fared a lot better than others.
It all depended on when the heat came and how much moisture there was but overall things are slightly above average or slightly below average.

Friesen says the dry weather and resulting smooth harvest resulted in the best crop quality in a very long time.
