Saskatchewan Harvest Virtually Complete
Shannon Friesen - Saskatchewan Agriculture

Farmscape for October 20, 2017

Saskatchewan Agriculture reports, with 98 percent of the crop now in the bin, the 2017 Saskatchewan harvest is virtually complete.
Saskatchewan Agriculture's weekly crop report, released yesterday, indicates 98 percent of the provincial crop is now combined.
Shannon Friesen, a Cropping Management Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says due to an ideal fall the southern parts of the province have all but wrapped up, the west central and east central regions are almost complete, the northeast has 96 percent of the crop in the bin and the northwest has 95 percent of the crop in the bin.

Clip-Shannon Friesen-Saskatchewan Agriculture:
Quality for the most part is the best we have had in a very long time.
We actually had a dry fall for the most part so luckily we did not see much downgrading due to things such as bleaching and staining and sprouting and things like that.
We also had a very minimal disease year as well so we've had minimal issues with root rot and with other diseases such as fusarium so luckily quality has been top notch.
We have heard reports of lower protein than normal and some reduced bushel weights but overall things are looking pretty good there.
In terms of yield, we are about average compared to our long term averages, which was expected due to the lack of moisture situations that we had for most of the summer.
Of course yields do vary greatly right across the province, even greatly within RMs and even on farms themselves.
For the most part, in the south part of the province, with the lack of moisture many of those yields have been below average to well below average.
As we move north in the province, if you did receive some more timely moisture, things are looking much better up there.

Friesen says crops remaining in the filed in the northern regions include flax, soybeans, canola and even some of the cereals but hopefully this warm dry weather will continue.
She says, with another week or two of good conditions, most producers will have wrapped up.
