Rain Still Needed to Replenish Saskatchewan Soil Moisture
Shannon Friesen - Saskatchewan Agriculture

Farmscape for September 22, 2017

Saskatchewan Agriculture reports rainfall last week delayed harvest for some producers but most were back in the fields within a few days.
Saskatchewan Agriculture released its weekly crop report for the period from September 12 to 18 yesterday.
Shannon Friesen, a Regional Crop Production Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says 75 percent of the crop has now been combined, only up about 10 percent from last week due to cool wet weather but the harvest still well ahead of the five year average.

Clip-Shannon Friesen-Saskatchewan Agriculture:
Topsoil moisture conditions have improved slightly from the previous week so things are still very very dry for the bulk of the province.
At the moment provincially topsoil moisture is rated at 21 percent adequate, 37 percent short and 42 percent very short.
On hay land and pasture it's 16 percent adequate, 36 percent short and 48 percent very short.
Even though we did get a little bit of rain it's certainly not enough to fully replenish what we have lost over the summer.
Last week we got varying amounts, anywhere from a trace amount to 36 millimeters in the deep southeast corner of the province.
In the south and central parts we only got a couple of tenths to maybe half an inch.
As we move more toward the North Battleford, Meadow Lake area we did hear that we did have about an inch or two of rain.
Things will be wet again up there and, even though we did get some rain down here, it's certainly not enough to do us any long term favors.
We are still going to need significant amounts of rainfall, hopefully prior to winter, in order to replenish both the topsoil as well as the subsoil.

Friesen says many of the later seeded crops in the central and northern regions are still immature so the hope is that they'll dry down soon.
She says it's only mid September so there's still time to combine and we are still well ahead of our long term average so hopefully we can get some ideal conditions and farmers can get back out there.
