Harvest Time Critical to Contribution of Agriculture to Jobs and Economic Activity
J.P. Gervias - Farm Credit Canada

Farmscape for September 5, 2017

The Chief Agricultural Economist with Farm Credit Canada suggests, with harvest well underway, now is a critical time for the contribution of Canada's agriculture sector to the creation of jobs and to the Canadian economy.
Farm Credit Canada's agriculture sector snapshots consider various factors that will influence cash receipts for the various agricultural commodities over the next year, including prices, production, demand and export opportunities.
J.P. Gervais, Farm Credit Canada's Chief Agricultural Economist, says the numbers indicate the outlook remains extremely positive for Canadian agriculture.

Clip-J.P. Gervais-Farm Credit Canada:
The interesting thing is that right now is a critical time for the agriculture sector with harvest.
If you look at crop receipts overall in Canada, the amount of revenues that are coming from crops, it's more than 33 billion dollars in 2016 so you've got a lot of revenues that are going to be spread out throughout the year to pay farm expenses, so to pay your local retailer, to pay agriculture equipment manufacturers, to pay the labor that are hired by these businesses.
A lot of the economic activity that is generated throughout the year across the entire supply chain is focused and concentrated right now at this time across the country.
That's pretty fantastic to think about that.
If you look at the size of the agri-food supply chain and the overall Canadian economy, we're talking about six to seven percent of Canadian GDP.
One in eight jobs actually is connected to the agri-food supply chain and the agriculture sector.
That's actually quite powerful to think that a lot of what we're doing right now as we speak out in the Canadian fields is actually generating a lot of activity in Canada and there's potential to grow even more as we're growing this sector and leveraging some of the opportunities that exist abroad.

Gervais says the solid performance of all sectors speaks to the resilience of Canada’s agriculture industry,
