Agriculture Ministers Continued Support for Trade Key to Pork Industry Success
Florian Possberg - Saskatchewan Pork Development Board

Farmscape for August 17, 2017

The Chair of the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board says the commitment of Canada's Agriculture Ministers to programs that support trade will play a key role in the continued success of Canada's pork industry.
Last month Canada's Agriculture Ministers agreed to key elements of the new five year Canadian Agricultural Partnership, including commitments to science, research, and innovation, markets and trade, environmental sustainability and climate change, value-added agriculture and agri-food processing, public trust and business risk management.
Florian Possberg, the Chair of Sask Pork, says an extensive program has been created that strengthens Canada's reputation of being a consistent supplier of high quality pork.

Clip-Florian Possberg-Saskatchewan Pork Development Board:
We've got a pork excellence program that is part of our whole food safety and, by being a consistent supplier and a reputation for very high quality that served us very well and it continues to be a real asset for our industry going forward.
The nuts and bolts of trade, making sure our product continues to have an advantage health wise, it's really the backbone of our whole strategy in the world market place.
The value of Canadian pork exported around the world continues to grow.
Our exports are a big big part of our industry, something like 70 percent of our industry.
We've been able to diversify away from just the United States and, with issues with discussions around trade that's worked for us, we've really become a significant exporter to southeast Asia, particularly growth in China and Japan.
That continues to be the backbone of our industry, our ability to trade globally.

Possberg says knowing governments remain committed provides the stability producers need to move forward with confidence.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
