Warmer Weather Accelerates Manitoba Crop Development
Anne Kirk - Manitoba Agriculture

Farmscape for July 6, 2017

Manitoba Agriculture reports warmer weather this past week has been positive for crop development and yield potentials in most areas look good.
Manitoba Agriculture released its weekly crop report Tuesday.
Anne Kirk, a Cereal Crop Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, reports crop development is fairly consistent across the province and depends on when crops where planted.

Clip-Anne Kirk-Manitoba Agriculture:
Weather conditions this past week have been more favorable in terms of the temperature for crop development.
We have seen some improved growth of warm season crops such as corn and soybeans due to the warmer temperatures this week and crops in most regions are in good to excellent condition.
Precipitation was variable last week throughout the province.
Most areas did receive some precipitation but it seemed to be fairly localized with scattered showers and trace amounts of precipitation in many areas.
The southwest region and the western part of the central region have been dry with precipitation below normal and crops in those areas could use some moisture.
Through most of the province yield potentials are looking good.
We don't see a lot of reports of disease or insect pressure in field crops.
With this warm weather we should see some increased growth of all crops.
The major factor right now is precipitation.
That will play a key factor moving throughout the growing season on how the crops are going to fare this season.

Kirk says generally cereal crops are now heading with some starting to flower, canola is flowering in most of the province, flax is starting to flower, early season soybeans are coming into flower, peas are flowing and sunflowers are reaching the bud stage.
She says in the central region corn ranges from the V3 to V8 stage and in the eastern region it's about V5 to V7.
