Manitoba Government Committed to Made in Manitoba Solution to Climate Change
Ralph Eichler - Agriculture Minister Manitoba

Farmscape for January 23, 2017

Manitoba's Agriculture Minister says the provincial government is committed to a "Made in Manitoba Solution" for ensuring everyone in Manitoba plays a role in addressing climate change.
In September the federal government announced that a carbon pricing system must be in place in all provinces by the end of 2018 or it will move to impose such as system.
Last week, Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ralph Eichler told reporters on hand for in Brandon for Manitoba Ag Days, a Made in Manitoba Solution will be a priority for the Manitoba government to ensure that we get it right.

Clip-Ralph Eichler-Agriculture Minister Manitoba:
Farmers are price takers.
We all know that.
We understand that.
The Premier's a farm boy, I'm a farm boy, we understand we've got to be profitable at the end of the day and we have to be profitable with our neighbors as well and profitable on the world market place.
If we're not competitive we're not in the game.
We understand, we get that, so how do we do that?
But we know it's a problem.
We have to adapt, we have to be part of that.
Everyone of us here has to be part of that solution.
Without us, we're still part of the problem
As you know we hired a fellow by the name of Dave McLaughlin to help us through this process, an individual that knows climate change inside out.
We can't make those decisions without good informed information that's based on Manitoba's perspective and they have met with over 155 different organizations so we're pretty excited about that.
Of course is it a done deal, not at all.
We only have one chance to do that and we're not going to be dictated by the federal government about policy that's going to affect Manitobans.
That's why the Made in Manitoba Solution will be a priority for our government in order to ensure that we get it right.

The province has indicated the introduction of a carbon pricing system must not be allowed to derail economic development within the province.
Eichler says any deal Manitoba commits to will be based on consolations with people who are involved in the agriculture industry.
