Fall Seeded Cereal Harvest Underway in Manitoba
Pam de Rocquigny - Manitoba Agriculture

Farmscape for August 3, 2016

Manitoba Agriculture reports the winter wheat and fall rye harvests are now underway across much of the province.
Manitoba Agriculture released its weekly crop report yesterday.
Pam de Rocquigny, a Cereal Crop Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, reports the harvest of the fall seeded cereal crops is underway and early indications are that yield and quality are good.

Clip-Pam de Rocquigny-Manitoba Agriculture:
We've seen producers starting to harvest their winter wheat and fall rye crops.
To date it looks like, in terms of some preliminary reports for yields, for winter wheat they range anywhere from 60 upwards to 95 bushels per acre and then for fall rye their yields range anywhere from 40 to 90 bushels per acre.
In terms of some preliminary quality information as well, in the southwest region, they're reporting that so far the quality has been good.
There's been low levels of fusarium damaged kernels in the harvested samples so far.
Harvest is just underway so, as producers continue to harvest and more samples are graded, and we get a better idea in terms of the quality both in terms of the fusarium damaged kernel levels and protein as well, we'll be able to paint a little better picture.
We're definitely seeing some variability with those yield ranges that I talked about before and that's likely related to, like most years, weather conditions.
The drier conditions earlier in the year may have impacted some of those lower yielding potentials and then excess moisture may have impacted them as well but, any time we have yields upwards of those 90 bushels per acre, that's obviously well above our provincial averages for those crop types.
A little bit of a silver lining so we'll see what those yields continue like as more of those crops are harvested.

De Rocquigny says the majority of the spring seeded cereal crops, spring wheat, barley and oats, are in the grain filling stage of development while the later seeded crops are still flowering and, depending on maturing, the spring seeded cereal harvest will begin in a short while.
She says canola and soybeans are well into the podding stage.
