Cooperative Spirit Among Agriculture Ministers as Range of Issues Discussed
Lyle Stewart - Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister

Farmscape for July 27, 2016

Saskatchewan's Agriculture Minister says Market Access and Trade, Business Risk Management and Grain Transportation were among the top priorities for his province when Canada's Agriculture Minister met last week.
Canada's Federal, Provincial, Territorial Agriculture Ministers met last week in Calgary to discuss plans for Canada's next Agricultural Policy Framework.
Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart says the ministers discussed topics ranging from business risk management to market access to science and innovation to environment to maintaining public trust as well as food processing and food policy, animal health and the regulatory framework.

Clip-Lyle Stewart-Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister:
We always put a lot of emphasis on market access, market development and trade policy so we talked fairly extensively about those things and particularly the CETA and Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deals and how important they are to the province.
Business risk management, that's AgriStability, AgriInvest and AgriInsurance, of course, that's huge for Saskatchewan and we spent a fair amount of time on that.
Science and Innovation is big with us.
Apart from those larger headings we talked about sub headings like grain transportation and that was a priority for us and we got I think good cooperation from other provinces on that one too.
Those I would say were the highlights from Saskatchewan's perspective but there were many other topics that are also of importance.

Stewart says, considering this was the first meeting following up Growing Forward-2, discussions were general but the spirit was cooperative.
He says the consensus was that consultations will continue within the individual provinces to prepare to hammer out more detail at next year's annual Agricultural Ministers' meeting.
