Western Canadian Winter Wheat Growers Pleased with this Year's Crops
Jake Davidson - Winter Cereals Canada

Farmscape for August 28, 2015

The executive director of Winter Cereals Canada reports winter wheat growers have been well pleased with this year's harvest.
Last fall's late canola harvest, which reduced the availability of acres for planting winter wheat, resulted in a dramatic drop in the numbers of acres planted in Manitoba and Saskatchewan but a consistent number of acres in Alberta.
Jake Davidson, the executive director of Winter Cereals Canada says, the crop that was planted came through the winter really well but a frost early in the growing season was cause from some concern.

Clip-Jake Davidson-Winter Cereals Canada:
The frost that came along apparently did not cause us a lot of problem.
We're hearing that the yields are good.
I've talked to people in the Portage La Prairie area that have been over 90 bushels, I've talked to people in Saskatchewan who have been very pleased with the 60s compared to what they think their spring wheat crop is going to look like, we're hearing very low fusarium in Manitoba this year.
The numbers came out from MAFRI based on crop insurance numbers showing that there was a very good pick up of the newer varieties that are more fusarium resistant so we've got a good crop, reasonable yields.
I talked to 1 guy that told me that he had a 13.2 percent protein on his winter wheat.
His yield was down from where he expected it to be but he was kind of hoping that he was going to get a protein bonus back up to the point where it's not going to make a lot of difference.
It looks like we came through OK.
I haven't talked to anybody this fall that has been unhappy with what their winter wheat did for them.

Davidson says, even with the reseeding of a lot of canola in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, a lot of canola is in the swath and it looks like there will be lots of opportunity to plant winter wheat this fall.
