Over 1,000 Visit Farm and Food Discovery Centre So Far This Year
Myrna Grahn - University of Manitoba

Farmscape for August 10, 2015

The manager of the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre reports over 1,000 people have visited the centre so far this year.
The Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre, which opened its doors about 4 years ago, is located at the University of Manitoba's Glenlea Research Station.
Among this summer's special events are the birth of baby piglets, from Tuesday to Thursday, August 18 to 20, a Pizza Party August 26 and an Open Farm Day September 20.
Myrna Grahn, the manager of the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre, says since January over 1,000 people have come through including general visitors, special groups and school groups.

Clip-Myrna Grahn-University of Manitoba:
Our mission is to be able to help families, school groups and the general public discover the importance of agriculture in everyone's lives and where their food comes from.
Our target audience would be children and families.
It could also be industry groups that would like to hold a special meeting here but the curriculum is designed for grades 4 to 8 to meet some of the programming needs that those ages are geared towards.
We have a number of interactive displays that feature how and where our food is produced.
There are a lot of hands on learning experiences for children of all ages and we focus on three main areas.
That would be crop production, livestock production and then how those Manitoba foods are processed, sold and make it to the plate on your dining room table.

Grahn notes the centre is located about 10 minutes south of Winnipeg on Highway 75 so it attracts school groups, summer camping groups and families from all over the province, but primarily from urban centres, it works closely with Ag in the Classroom and tailors programming to fit with the Department of Education's curriculum.
